UTILITY SET UP AND CANCELLATIONS

 PROCEDURE AND AVERAGE TIMETABLE  

As the procedure to set up and cancel the utilities is different than Europe, this can be very difficult for an expat to handle. Many expats prefer giving a ‘Power of Attorney’ to someone local to do this on her/his behalf. 

It is obligatory that the expats obtain ‘The power of attorney’ from the notary with the details of the person to whom s/he will give authority to sign the necessary documents to set up/cancel the utilities on her/his behalf.  The authorised person will need the documents below to proceed with setting up and cancellation;

-         ‘Power of Attorney’ Given by the Tenant

-         Photocopy of the Relevant Pages of the Passport

-         Photocopy of ‘Residence Visa’

-         Photocopy of the ‘Contract’

-         Installation Number or a Previous Bill

 ELECTRICITY COMPANY (TEK, Bogazici, Ayedas)

When the authorised person goes to the electricity company with the documents above to set up, s/he will have to pay ‘Security Deposit’ on your behalf. This fee will be paid back to you when the cancellation of this utility is made. (This company will price the fee as per the size of the property.)
Electric bills are issued every month. Overdue bills are paid at your district Electric Department Central Office There is a significant late charge for overdue bills.

 WATER COMPANY (İski)

 As in above, when the authorised person goes to the water company with the same documents to set up, s/he will have to pay ‘Security Deposit’ on your behalf. This fee will be paid back to you when the cancellation of this utility is made.
Electric bills are issued every month.

 GAS COMPANY (İgdaş):

As in above, when the authorised person goes to the gas company with the same documents to set up, s/he will have to pay ‘Security Deposit’ on your behalf. This This fee will be added to your future bills and it will be paid back to you when the cancellation is made. (This fee will be priced depending on the property.)

After the set up of the gas bill is done you will call the gas company to make an appointment in your property. Generally, they will give you an appointment for 1 or 2 days later. They give you the date but they are not able to let you know exactly what time they will come. Therefore you will need to wait in the property on that day. A representative from the gas company will come to your property, they will check the installation, they confirm that it is elligible to be activated and give you some documents to keep. These documents need to be kept for future reference.

Most homes have been equipped with natural gas for heating. Gas bills are issued every month. Sometimes, the cost of gas is included in your monthly general building charges. If your gas is handled separately from the general apartment, your monthly bills are paid through automatic bank withdrawal or through payment at the banks listed on the bill. Some ovens and bathroom water heating units used LPG gas tubes. These are sold on trucks that rove the neighbourhoods, often playing a catchy jingle to advertise their presence. They can also be summoned by phone.

 TELEPHONE & INTERNET

Telephone and Internet (ADSL) applications are made together; but, without the phone line is set up, internet set up can not be done and the ADSL (internet) modem can not be given.  After two applications are made; they give you the a date which will be 1 or 2 days later but they are not able to let you know exactly what time they will come. Therefore you will need to wait in the property on that day. A representative from the phone company will bring the line to the inside of the property. You will have to have a phone box to enable him to do the set up. There will be a standard telephone set up fee and this will be added to your first bill, it will not be paid back to you.

Currently telephone bills are issued every month and the bills are delivered to your property. However, you need to visit http://www.ttnet.com.tr/ to receive your internet bills online because they do not send them to your property.

 PAYMENT PROCEDURE

-       It is the easiest option that when one set sup a bank account, s/he fills the necessary form and asks for these bills  
  to be paid automatically each month

-       -  Utility payments can be made through online banking

-       -  They can be paid at the banks mentioned at the back of the bill

-       - Some bills can be paid at the post offices but this completely depends on the bill&post office
