Turkey has developed into quite a unique society. A blend of East
and West, the Turkish people have retained their unique character
embodying the duality of their culture. You are likely to see Western
stores adjacent to Turkish stores, Western buildings adjacent to Turkish
houses. Turkish people are proud of their ancestral heritage, consisting
of the rulers of great empires, but are equally proud of living in
a democratic and modern country. Turkey is a bridge between the two
continents of Asia and Europe. As a regional power, Turkey has long
established ties with the Middle East and maintain neighbourly relations,
which stem from a common history, geography and culture. Although
Ankara is Turkey's administrative capital, Istanbul is the commercial,
industrial and intellectual centre of the country. The city lies divided
between two continents, bridging the gap between Asia and Europe.
The position of the country has had a profound effect on its people.
Turks, having interacted with their neighbours for centuries, have
absorbed into their daily routines numerous characteristics from both
Asia and Europe. However, even with the incorporation of Euro-Asian
culture and attitudes, the people of Turkey remain steadfast in their
devotion to their country.
Geography The Republic of Turkey is located in an area where the
African, Asian and European continents almost come to a meeting point.
Climate Turkey's landscape is rather diverse, which
results in about five main climatic variations throughout the country.
The area around the Sea of Marmara, known as European part of Turkey,
experiences a Mediterranean climate. Winters near this region are
moderate and wet, but tend to endure chilly winds which blow from
the Black Sea. Summers in this area are warm but temperatures generally
do not rise to oppressive heights.
The Culture A rich ethnic
mix borne of countless invasions has left its mark on Turkey. Armenians,
Greeks and Mongols have all been incorporated into the Turk majority
throughout the centuries of invasions, resulting in a wide range of
racial types. Perhaps because of the mixture of nationalities, as
well as the country's religious principles, the Turks are naturally
hospitable to foreigners and no patience for racial prejudice.
Language Turkish, which is related to languages spoken throughout
Asia, is the official language of the country. The Turkish alphabet
has more letters than the Latin-based alphabet, but it is basically
the same as that used in European languages.
Religion 98 percent of Turkey's population is Muslim. However,
the Turkish government holds a complete freedom of religion ideology.
Most Turks take a fairly moderate attitude toward their religion.
the majority of Turks no longer publicly observe the five calls to
prayer. However, despite the generally relaxed religious attitude,
any words spoken against the Muslim faith will surely sound offensive
to a Turk. |
